The company is considered an innovator in electronic drums and was the first to use 100% ash shells for their acoustic kits. The company also led the way with deeper bass drums at a time when they were traditionally only available through custom drum makers. Another industry first was their blended shells using a maple inner section with an ash outer ply and the use of alder wood which is known for its warm tone and punchy attack.

7. Alesis Drums Nitro Electronic Drum Kit
Over the last few years, Alesis has become a strong new contender in the electronic drum market. The brand has introduced a number of moderately priced electronic drum sets and one of the most recent of those is the Alesis Drums Nitro Electronic Drum Kit.
This kit comes in two versions, the standard and a second kit with mesh heads. That’s the model we will review here. The mesh heads are for the snare and tom drums and the result is much more natural than the usual rubber heads. They are tunable and very quiet, so you can practice as much as you like without bothering others in your family or the neighbors.
The Alesis Nitro Kit allows you to create a number of sounds and change your drum set for up to 40 consecutive songs. The kit is MIDI compatible and you can even do external sample triggering. For a louder sound, the kit can be connected up to an amp or a PA system.
The kit consists of 8 drumming elements along with the drum pads, cymbal pads, and the kick pad. The snare drum is a dual-trigger unit that measures 8 inches in width while the tom pads are 8-inch single zone pads.
The cymbal section of the kit contains hi-hats, the ride cymbal and the crash cymbal with choke. The hi-hat foot controller works well even without a stand. The cymbals are 10 inches in width and are mounted on an aluminum stack with four posts. And a kick tower allows you use the kick pedal which is much more effective than a foot-switch kick to use.
The Alesis Nitro Kit is adjustable down to kids as young as 7 years of age. The pads are adjustable but reaching the foot pedal may be difficult for children who are shorter.
- Very affordable and easy to use
- Mesh heads add a quality touch

8. DW Design Series Tobacco Burst drum set Models 22/10/12/16/14
This is DW Design’s premium drum set, designed for drummers with some experience or for professionals. Beginners should be aware that the learning curve may take somewhat longer than with a less expensive drum set. However, once these drums are mastered, they will last quite a number of years without needing to be replaced.
The kits come in several different models and all are beautifully constructed using high-quality materials. Each one has a number of impressive features including durable maple shells, a special grain pattern designed to control vibration, innovative mounting, and many additional features to give you a sound quality that is hard to beat.
DW Design chose maple to construct these drums because it is not only very durable but adds depth and warmth to the sound that is impossible with less-expensive poplar. The grain pattern runs vertically instead of horizontally to generate less tension while also lowering the pitch of the drums by controlling the amount of vibration.
Another special feature of this drum kit is the suspension tom mount. This provides assurance that the toms will stay secure in their position by using an innovative mounting system exclusively developed by the manufacturer. Because of this feature, vibrations from the drums will not affect the quality of the sound.
The sound quality of these DW Design models is excellent. You’ll hear deep and rich sounds that are guaranteed to impress your audience. The overall construction is also excellent. From the suspension system to each drum, the kit uses high-quality materials that should assure you they’ll withstand the test of time. And the quality of the sound won’t fail you since the kit requires very little tuning. Once it’s set, it stays exactly the way you want it and requires almost no fine-tuning.
For experienced or professional drummers, the price will probably not be an issue. However, beginners may be disappointed in the higher price and may want to look at cheaper alternatives we’ve mentioned earlier. But for those who aren’t concerned about the budget, this is a high-end product with very few downsides.

- High-quality construction
- Requires very little tuning
- Expensive
- Lack of add-on drums

Things to Consider before Buying a Beginner Drum Set (buying guide)
When you’re planning on purchasing a beginner drum set, there are tons of options in all price ranges in 2023. That’s where we come in. Our goal is to help you narrow the choices and decide on the best beginner drum set for you. Here are the basics you should consider:
The Basics
Before choosing the best drum set to start out with, you need to know some of the basics about drums and how each piece is designed to sound the way it does. There are three basic types of drums that a drum set is made out of:
-
The Snare Drum
The snare drum is essentially the main part of your new drum kit. It’s the backbone of the system and provides the strongest regular accents and fills. If you’re right-handed children, you’ll be playing the snare drum with the left hand. You’ll find that snare drums are often fitted with snare wires that create a unique buzzing or snappy sound when the drum is played.
-
The Tom Drum
The tom drum is sometimes called a tom-tom and is usually played with sticks. They come in various sizes and normally a drum set will have three or less of these. Tom drums are played to create solos and fills and are the central ingredient of the drum set. There are four different types of tom drums that can be used by a drummer, including floor toms, concert toms, double-headed rack toms, and sometimes a rototom can be used for special effects.
-
The Bass Drum
The bass drum, or kick drum, is the largest drum in the drum set. It creates a massive low pitched sound and is the heart of the drum set by setting the primary beat or timing element of the ensemble. Bass drums can have other uses for special effects or with double pedals when they are played separately.
The Drum Kit
The drummer’s kit (or “breakables”) is put together with four different groups of parts. These consist of the sticks, cymbals, snare drum, seat (throne) and the bass drum pedal.
- The “shells” consist of the bass drum and several toms.
- The “extensions” consist of a tambourine, cowbell, and a set of chimes.
- The “hardware” is made up of the drum stands, drum pedals, and the cymbal stands
-
The Ride Cymbals
Drummers use the Ride Cymbals regularly to keep the rhythmic pattern constant. Most ride cymbals are medium in weight with a diameter of 20-inches. Ride cymbals are designed to be heard clearly by slicing through all of the other sounds on the drum set.
-
The Hi-Hat Cymbals
Hi-hat cymbals are a combination of two cymbals and a foot pedal. They are mounted on a metal stand or pole supported by legs. They are normally activated by sticks or by a foot pedal that pushes them together creating a crashing sound. When the foot is lifted, the cymbals move apart and resonate. Different sounds can also be created by striking the open hi-hat cymbals with sticks instead of closing them together.
-
Crash Cymbals
Crash cymbals create the strongest accents of the drum set and are often used for making loud, grandiose crescendos and climaxes, vocal entries, or any major change in the mood of the music being played. They are normally played along with hi-hats or ride cymbals and often will produce loud sounds even when used delicately.
What Sizes do Beginner Drum Sets Come in?
Most beginner drum sets include five pieces but some junior sets for younger students or children can come with only three pieces. The 5-piece sets will include up to three toms, a snare, a kick drum, and a hi-hat. Cymbals may not always be included in budget-priced drum sets because good quality cymbals can cause the price to exceed the desired range of the set. Drumsticks may sometimes not be included in some of the least expensive sets.
3-Piece Drum Sets
Three-piece drum sets are good for beginners as they are less complicated and create less hassle for managing the toms for smaller children or younger drummers. These sets are also usually a compact size allowing them to be moved around easily.
5-Piece Drum Sets
Most adult drum sets consist of five pieces and can be good for beginner drummers. They will include two mounted toms, a floor tom, a 16 or larger inch bass drum, and a snare. These sets are usually made of real wood shells to keep the sound quality from being compromised.
Learning how to maintain your drums is almost as important as learning how to properly play them. Be sure to understand the basics of maintaining your new drum set so that it continues to work properly for years to come.
Electronic Drum Sets
Drums can be loud, and sometimes annoying to other family members or neighbors. If this is a problem, you might consider an electronic drum set instead of the regular version. Electronic drum sets are not only quiet when played with headphones, but the better quality versions can also offer many additional features that even the largest and more traditional drum sets do not have.
Mastering a set of drums properly will take considerable effort but can be extremely rewarding. With children, one of the benefits of playing drums early at a young age is that it will reinforce their work ethic as well. The child can learn and develop their musical talents while the exercise helps them in other areas of life as they eventually grow into adults.
Remember that regular practice is the key to becoming a better musician. When you set aside a regular time each day or week to practice your drums, the results can be rewarding and amazing as you become a better musician.
